Do you have a brick/stone paver walkway, driveway or patio that continually grows weeds? I found out how to get rid of weeds between pavers that’s simple and low cost. Plus, it doesn’t require using any toxic chemicals. =)
First, let me say that this solution is not a one-time fix. You’ll probably need to apply this treatment once a year between bricks, cracks, etc.., maybe even twice.
However, if you do this early enough in the season (before weeds get large), this can be a quick and easy task. And, it costs much less than sealing your patio or walkway for about $2 per square foot.
Kill Weeds with Plain Vinegar and Salt:
I’m talking about spraying between your interlocking pavers with vinegar and salt. Not only does this job include super cheap materials, but you don’t need to worry about harming your kids, pets or yourself.
You only need vinegar, salt, dish soap and a pump sprayer. If you need a recipe, you can find out how to make salt and vinegar weed killer here. Depending on the size of your patio or pathway, the vinegar-salt mixture max only cost you about $10-15.
Note: This method will work to kill moss between pavers as well. In fact, the salt component will kill virtually all plants, so don’t spray it on your lawn grass, flowers or shrubs that you want to keep.
Cheap Garden Sprayers that Make this DIY Job Easy:
If you have a small area to spray, I suggest getting a cheap hand pump sprayer for about $15. This should handle the job just fine, and you won’t need any fancy equipment or tools.
However, if you need to get rid of weeds growing between driveway pavers, you may need a larger 4-gallon backpack sprayer. These units cost more money, but they have a larger capacity and require less time and work.
If you have a larger area to spray, you may want to also consider super concentrated vinegar products. They can end up saving you even more money when you buy the concentrated version in multiple containers. (Compare non-toxic weed killers here.)
Once you spray your weeds, wait 48 hours for the plants to dry up. Then, you can take a push broom and brush the debris away. Keep in mind that the smaller the plants, the easier this task will be.
How to Stop Weeds Growing Through Pebbles/Gravel:
You can use vinegar and salt to safely stop weeds from growing in a gravel or pebble-filled area. That said, you may want to invest in landscape fabric or underlayment to naturally prevent and eliminate weeds growing in the first place.
You can kill weeds effectively with your sprayer, however, you won’t be able to remove them easily with a push-broom.
