How to Prevent Weeds from Growing in Your Yard

Weeds. They’re the bane of every gardener’s existence. They pop up out of nowhere and seem to spread like wildfire. But fear not! With some simple DIY strategies and natural, non-toxic methods, you can prevent weeds from taking over your lawn and garden.

How to Prevent Weeds from Growing in Your Yard - using Natural, Non Toxic and Cost Effective Solutions

1. Spread Mulch in Yard to Prevent Weeds

First, use mulch or ground cover. Scotts recommends a layer about 2-3 inches deep. By covering the soil around your plants with a layer of mulch, you can prevent weed seeds from germinating and growing. Plus, it helps retain moisture in the soil and adds nutrients as it decomposes.

Add Mulch in Yard to Naturally Prevent Weeds from Growing

You may need to top off your mulch every couple of years into keep weeds at bay. Not only will this keep weeds away, but it can give your yard a fresh new look each year (without having to re-landscape).

Some landscapers also lay weed fabric underneath the mulch as an extra layer of weed protection. Although weed fabric costs more up front, the time and work it can save you years going forward can be well worth the investment.

2. Plant Ground Cover to Minimize Weeds

In addition, some people plant ground cover or low-maintenance plants because they can help smother out weeds and prevent them from growing. Not to mention, they add beauty and diversity to your garden.

If you choose varieties that naturally live in your climate, they may not require a lot of water, pruning or care either. I mean, we don’t want to prevent weed-pulling just to add more yardwork elsewhere, right?

3. Spray Sprouting Weeds with Vinegar

If you want a natural, non-toxic way to prevent weeds, try using vinegar. Yes, that’s right – the same stuff you use to dress your salad can also be used to kill weeds.

Simply mix 1 gallon of vinegar with 1 cup table salt and spray directly on weeds. Alternatively, you can buy a super-concentrated vinegar in bulk and then dilute it to the ratio you want – generally more cost effective.

The acid in the vinegar combined with the salt will dry out the weeds and prevent them from growing. (Just be careful not to spray it on any plants you want to keep.)

Although vinegar weed killer method is not actually “preventative”, it can significantly cut down the time you spend pulling weeds. In fact, if you spray early enough in the season (when the soil is dry), you can zap all weeds before they really emerge.

Note: Some articles also state that you can use corn gluten meal to prevent weeds from germinating if you apply it before weeds start to grow. However, other reputable sources, including Oregon State University, report that corn gluten meal did not prevent weeds from germinating.

By implementing some or all of these strategies, you can prevent weeds from growing in your lawn and garden, saving yourself time, money and frustration in the long run. Plus, using non-toxic and cost-effective solutions will help help you sleep better at night.
